Whale
A whale is casino slang for a player who bets at an exceptionally high level. We're talking thousands or tens of thousands per hand, spin, or round. The exact threshold depends on the casino, but if you're betting enough that the casino assigns you a personal account manager, you're whale territory.
Casinos treat whales very differently from regular players. VIP hosts, private tables, tailored bonus offers, luxury gifts, cashback rates that regular players never see, and in land-based casinos, complimentary suites, flights, and dinners. The motivation is straightforward: a single whale can generate more revenue than hundreds of casual players combined.
The other side of being a whale is that the losses are equally outsized. Stories of whales losing millions in a single session are not exaggerated. The casino's mathematical advantage doesn't care about your net worth. At high stakes, the house edge takes larger absolute bites, and the variance swings are spectacular in both directions.
