Variance

Variance (also called volatility) describes the risk profile of a slot. It tells you how the payouts are distributed: frequent small wins or rare large ones.

A low-variance slot like Starburst will hand you wins on roughly every third or fourth spin, but those wins rarely exceed a few times your stake. Your bankroll stays relatively stable and sessions feel smooth. A high-variance slot like Book of Dead or Lil Devil might go 100+ spins without a single win, then suddenly drop a 500x or 1,000x payout. Your bankroll chart looks like a rollercoaster.

There's no objectively better option. If you're playing with a small budget and want longer sessions, low variance keeps you alive. If you're chasing a big hit and you've got the stomach to watch your balance bleed, high variance is the game. Just match your bankroll to your variance tolerance. Playing a high-variance slot with 50 spins worth of balance is asking for trouble.
