India's online gambling landscape changed dramatically with the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming (PROG) Act 2025, which introduced a comprehensive national ban on "online money games." OGAI is tasked with promoting e-sports and social gaming while shutting down money-based gambling platforms. It has the power to order ISPs to block websites, direct payment providers to freeze accounts, and pursue criminal charges against operators and promoters.

This ban has been controversial. India's massive population of 1.4 billion and rapidly growing internet penetration made it one of the world's most promising gambling markets.
