Basic Strategy

Basic strategy is a set of rules that tells you the mathematically optimal play for every possible hand combination in blackjack. Given your two cards and the dealer's upcard, basic strategy tells you whether to hit, stand, double down, split, or surrender. Every decision has been calculated by running billions of simulated hands.

Following basic strategy perfectly reduces the house edge to roughly 0.5%, depending on table rules. That makes blackjack one of the best-value games in any casino. Ignore basic strategy and play by instinct, and the house edge can climb to 2% or higher. The difference between "always stand on 16" and "hit on 16 against a dealer 10" is real money over time.

Basic strategy charts are easy to find online and many casinos even sell card-sized versions in their gift shops. There's no penalty for consulting one at the table. It's not card counting. It's simply making the right decision with the information that's openly available.
